Donabate is a village on a peninsula between the Swords estuary and the Rogerstown estuary, with Portrane at its tip and the M1 at the other end. The approach road from the Swords side, the R126, is a long single carriageway with bends, a railway bridge and an 80 km/h limit, and it carries all the traffic in and out, so it is where learners here get used to following at distance and judging overtakes. The village centre is compact, with a main street, a station car park and new estates on the Portrane Road built with roundabouts and 30 km/h limits. Beach traffic on summer weekends and the school run on Ballisk Road are the busy times; otherwise the roads are quiet. Portrane adds a narrow coast road and a steep approach to the beach. The nearest RSA test centres are Finglas and Mulhuddart Maple House, both roughly twenty kilometres south-west using the M1 and the M50, and Swords is on the way. Donabate has a station on the Belfast commuter line with trains to Connolly and buses to the city centre leave from the village through Swords.
